The Fool

Keywords: Youthful energy, fresh start, new beginnings, optimism, trust, naïveté, innocence, start of a cycle.

Our heroine, the Fool, unabashedly launches herself into the world, devoid of all doubt and with a loyal companion by her side. Her face radiating naïve optimism of youth, she is happy for the journey to have begun. Willing to try, not dwelling on possible obstacles ahead, she leaps into the unknown.

The Fool is a card of new beginnings, adventure, and spontaneity. It embodies the spirit of exploration and the willingness to embrace the unknown.

This card reminds us of our our youthful qualities, such as innocence, easy trust and the ability to live in the present. Being opened to new experience, enjoying the journey and not being too preoccupied with the destination, can lead to surprising new results.

A word of caution: stay mindful, that adopting a carefree spirit and leaping into unknown, can delightfully lead you off the beaten track, but can just as well send you straight into unexpected pitfalls. Stay curious as a child, but use your experience and stay observant as an adult would.

Reversed: Foolishness, jumping in before looking, getting ahead of oneself

Planet: Uranus (and Aquarius by default)
Element: Air

Reversed meaning

Fear of Change: You are reluctant to take risks or to step into the unknown. This means you have missed important opportunities for growth. Change is often hard, but rarely all negative. Remember, you can never grow and evolve, if you tend to always stay the same.

Naivety: You can be a little naive, but do not be gullible or reckless. This is a warning that you may be ignoring important details with potential consequences. Take note of what is taking place right before your nose.

Impulsiveness: Looks like you are acting without thinking, making hasty decisions that could result in negative outcomes. Sure, follow your instincts, but anything that can’t wait until tomorrow might be too good to be true.

Insecurity: Still unsure you can land on your feet? Let the inner cat take hold! Doubting your chosen path or your abilities, may cause you to hold back from pursuing new experiences. Now, that would be a shame, wouldn’t it?

Stagnation: You are feeling stuck or you are unwilling to move forward. Most often that happens as a result of fear or uncertainty. Fear should make you mindful, informed, prepared. Not stop you in your tracks, indefinitely. Get ready, then conquer you fear. That’s what bravery is all about.

Corresponding Female from History

The woman who ran as far and as fast as the men.

In 1967 Kathrine Virginia Switzer became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. At the time, women in the USA’s AAU could not compete in races over a mile and a half long, as it was deemed too challenging for the female amateur athletes. Kathrine attended the marathon incognito.

Once it was revealed that a woman was competing among men, the race manager tried physically to remove Kathrine from the race, grabbing and shoving her aggressively. Fellow racers, all men, supported her effort, freeing her from the assailant and she finished the marathon successfully.

Her crossing the finish line caused a big media uproar, as it was clear women could run marathons as well as men did. Nevertheless, it was not until five years later that the Boston Marathon established an official race for women.
