The Devil [Obsessions]

The Devil

Keywords: Materialism, obsessions, compulsions, addictions, illusions, fear.

The Devil is the 15th card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck, and it carries rich symbolism related to themes of temptation, addiction, obsession and entrapment. While it often has a negative connotation, it also offers important lessons about personal freedom and the limitations we place on ourselves.

This card represents being trapped by unhealthy patterns, illusions of control, or excessive attachment to material or superficial desires. The Devil card urges awareness of self-imposed limitations. It suggests breaking free from what holds you back to regain true freedom and empowerment.

A word of caution: Do not shy away from the Devil card, as it offers a valuable opportunity to address the possibly negative aspects of self. Each and everyone of us has a dark, negative and destructive side. To deny this part, is to ignore a side of self that is equality, or even more important as the side we find easier to accept. Temptation, addition, compulsiveness, obsessions, denial, repressed desires, fear etc. are all very real and present in all of us, holding us back and making us feel pessimistic and hostile, mean and frankly, even a little bit evil, at times. It is a natural part of us, all of us. The only way to reduce the impact of negative impulses and emotions on our lives, is to face and understand them, not fear or deny them.
